But, before I go on… I think I owe you guys something:

    _____________________________________________________

    Fun (And A Surprising Amount
    of Sun)… In The Redwoods!

That’s right ladies and gents; it’s time for a travel story
of wedding bliss, foggy nights, tasty eats, and of course
    our beautiful world.

    _________________________________________________

It was early… The pre-sunrise light fought with clouds
and raced endlessly upward, fighting to hide the moon’s
glow, as it stripped the cobwebs of exhaustion from my eyes.

Traffic was blessedly quiet as we rolled into downtown Orlando,
hopping on the toll road toward the airport I let out a little grin
as I glanced at my Uncle Eric, dead asleep in the passenger seat.

We parted ways at the terminal, he was flying to Chicago for the
start of his workweek, flying all over the world.

Me? I was flying standby to San Francisco, then hopping a “puddle
jumper” up to Eureka for Christin and Jason’s wedding

After 19 hours of travel and multiple missed flights, we finally broke
through a thick layer of Pacific fog, and I caught site of the delightful
    redwoods that surrounded the area.

The gracious and lovely mother of the Bride picked me up from
the airport, and brought me the keys to the car I’d be driving (The same
keys that I somehow forgot to leave with them when I left, and had
to overnight back to them!). After a few minutes spent visiting with
the bride, I checked in at my hotel, and decided to go out and see what
    the area had to offer!

I could very LITERALLY write 2-3 more blog posts just from the time
I spent exploring Eureka, Arcata, Ferndale, and more… The people I met,
the dogs and horses I played with, and the sunset I was able to capture.

It was wonderful… But this story is all about the wedding

Friday morning I woke up early… Actually that’s only partially true.
I woke up at almost noon MY time

The items to accomplish for the day began with a trip to a local nail salon
to snag some images of the Bridal party getting ready for the big day.
My next step was to head out scouting for portrait locations. Christin (the
Bride) had recommended one that she thought would be nice, and was she
    EVER right?!

From the moment I pulled up, I could barely wipe the smile from my face.
Redwood trees towered above me, dwarfing my 6’4″ frame as if I were a
small child playing beneath a pier.

I had a blast capturing the mood, and scouting for where I would shoot the
next day, all with that little 15mm fisheye… But then I broke out the 70-200
F2.8L I was carrying, and tried to find a unique detail or two.

(Something that is surely not hard to do in a redwood forest… Even one
covered with bike paths in the middle of a town!)

    “By A Thread”

    Flower - Redwood

After an hour or so playing in the woods, I decided it was high time for
some lunch, and headed back toward the ocean, in hopes of finding some
    tasty eats.

I did too… At a small Irish pub that just happened to serve smoked salmon
sandwiches. MAN, I love the Pacific Northwest

    “Hunger”

    Salmon Sandwich

I spent the rest of my afternoon exploring all Eureka had to offer… From
quaint camera shops, to hippies, great coffee, and buildings that warned
you to run away from them if there was an earthquake.

    What a cool place!

After my exploring, I headed to the Church to help set up (I’m a full service
photographer ) and practice with them during the reception.

I’ve already shown you some of the photos from that, a couple of posts ago,
    but I can’t resist posting this one…

    “A Homeschooler’s Concept of Smoking”

    Candle

That one just cracks me up!

Early the next morning, we all arrived at the Church to prepare.
(And now YOU get to prepare for more rapid-fire photos and less
    words )

    “Readyness”

There’s just something about this picture… I think my friend
Matthew Saville hit the nail on the head when he described it:

“I think that one is the most beautiful…with her lips half covered
by the makeup artist..it makes her look gorgeous….just something
    about it…supermodel gorgeous.”

So there you have it Mrs. Christin, any time you’re in the mood
to look supermodelish (not that you don’t normally) just cover half
    of your lips, haha

    “Sisters, Servants”

    Sisters

I’m always so blessed when I see people washing feet, it truly
is the epitome of being a servant… Christ did it for a reason, eh?
The Bride’s sister was cleaning her (the bride’s) feet in preperation
    for the day.

    “Words Of Wisdom”

    Words Of Wisdom

The Bride chose to read while her hair was being finished.

    “Mr. Jason Hunt”

    The Groom

A genuinely rare moment where he wasn’t beaming!
A few minutes after I took that somber shot, I spotted
a few ceremonial scarves/ robe appendages, and promptly
    threw it around Jason’s neck.

His brother grabbed one a moment later, and started dancing
and singing in what seemed to be Yiddish!

    “Boys Will Be Boys”

    Boys will be boys

It wasn’t all fun and games though… In preparation for
meeting his bride, the groom spent a few minutes in prayer
    with his best man.

    “Prayers For ________ (Life)”

    Prayer With Friends

    I adore that shot.
    Good men.

My new favorite order of a wedding day includes doing
all of the photos BEFORE the ceremony, in order to have
more time with family and friends. I also think it is extremely
fun and endearing to watch the groom as he struggles to catch
a glimpse of his Bride’s reflection in my lens.

    So cute!

    “Reflections Of His Future”

    Reflections of the future

And that my friends, is all for tonight…
Actually, here’s a teaser photo (or two) for the finale of this post series

    “Vintage”

    Vintage

    “All Natural”

    No PS

The light in the woods there is amazing.
This shot is straight out of the camera.

Talk to you all again soon, lots of new things on the
horizon that I’m sure some of you will be particularly
    excited to see!

  • Okay to clarify, it’s not necessarily the covering of half her lips that makes the shot gorgeous, it’s just the moment itself. I’m sure that if her face was all visible, she’d still look like a supermodel.

Can’t wait to see more! Oh wait, I already have a link to the rest of the photos… Thanks!

    =Matt=

  • Got to love my new online proofing capability, don’t ya?

    Go to sleep!

  • great post… can’t wait to see the next one

i really like ‘hunger’ and ‘a homeschooler’s idea of smoking.’ lol.

  • I like the homeschoolers idea of smoking.

  • You and Matt are such a cute couple…’cuse me..manly team.

Your words so inhance the photos from the wedding. I’m wondering if there is a way to blend the two for a totally unique wedding photography business idea

  • ps. I love the coastal redwoods. I’ll have to show you the pictures I took of that area when I visited in my twenties on a motorcycle. I like the salmon sandwich shot..Spence would luv to eat that too

  • Definately  “Blow Me”!
As I’ve said countless times before, you’ve got talent.
Not only with your photography, but also your writing.
I love that you put so much heart into a single shoot, admireable really.

I looked for a photo to critique in this post and I couldn’t find one that I don’t love, is it bad that that annoys me? Haha..

  • hey when do you leave chatt-town? will u still be there monday night?

  • You make such poignant and clear shots. Narrative, which is what a lot of wedding photographers miss. I love it!

I think the half-covered lips one should be called “Ritual”. That’s really what it is, between women. A ritual, and a bonding.

  • Hopefully your not processing for more than 4hrs…

  • WOOT!  Yay for photos!  Thanks, Eric!  Looking forward to seeing you in a few days… yes?

  • i swear i could smell and taste the salmon when i saw that sandwich picture. mmm.

  • Well played, sir, very well played.

  • ooohh, where are you guys hiking??  my very favorite place in  the world is in the eastern seirra nevadas in an area called Mammoth Lakes.  maybe you are going there.  lots of folks from the SoCal area go there.  I’m sure you’ll have a blast and get great pics wherever you go…as usual, your pics are always fabulous! =)

  • Your favorite, hmm? Favorite what is the question. *grin*

That sandwich looks absolutely scrumptious. I’m going to have to figure out how to cook myself one!

I have a question for you… with your photo website, do you ever worry about privacy issues? It has your full name on it. Using that, I was able to pull up where you live (I’m not stalking, really. I’ve just been looking into this issue and seeing how easy it is). The reason I want to know is that I’ve been taking online commissions for my artwork and illustrations and am in the process of creating a separate site for that. But… how much information should I reasonably put out there? Especially if that site is linked to my xanga (which it will be, as most of the people who know me read my blog). Has this ever been a problem for you?

  • Hi,  Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful pictures.  I hope and pray your travels and hike will be grand.  Well, I do not know of anyone getting married but I will always keep you in mind.  Take Care, Sharon in Charleston, SC

  • like the makeup photograph. :)

  • Those are beautiful shots — the first one (the flower) is really representative of that part of the world, as is the salmon sandwich!  And I love the one of the groom sneaking a peek!  Have a great time in the Sierra — hope to meet you when you’re in Laguna (ryc earlier — please say more about your workshops).           Janet

  • And I thought I was busy!  lol…..  Gotta love it when you have great lighting! I love the second to last kissing shot!!!!!

  • fun stuff! and nope, that wasn’t Berry, it’s inside Bonaventure cemetery in Savannah….sigh, I LOVE that city.

  • these are just fantastic photos!

  • i forgot what you do for a living… that is a lot of travel, i’m jealous. i like the “readyness” shot of the bride too. although i might it better in b&w or a brown tone.

  • Eric, as usual, your pics are stunning.  We haven’t ever met, but I feel like I know what a quality human being you are, just thru your blogs about your travels, and your eye.  I LOVED the one of the brothers praying.  The mother of the groom will no doubt love that one too.  As should the bride.  Hope you’re safe, and still enjoying what you’re doing.  It seems so.  Keep up the great work, luv!  God bless

  • Hey Eric…. you really do travel a lot!!! I love it. I hope you aren’t disappointed with me, It’s so hard for me to commit to a date because I never know when Bob is going to be in town. He gets these last minute trips all the time. When you’re in Chicago, let me know and we’ll definitely hook up!!!!! You are such a fantastic guy and I can’t wait to meet you. Great wedding and for the title… I think “A homeschooler’s idea of smoking” is perfect!!!!! ~ Dawn

  • very nice photos!!

  • What are we going to do with my sister….”enhance”  Mary! LOL  Actually I am just as bad, but I live with a walking dictionary who corrects my spellings and my pronunciation.  My boys played “stump the daddy” growing up….they would take a dictionary and try to find ridiculous words that their Dad could not spell…..it was difficult to find any.

Loved seeing more shots.  I am always touched by the connection to our Lord in the midst of the big day…so esp love “words of wisdom” and ” Prayers for____life”.  That is when I really choked up at our latest wedding…..I peaked through the door to see how the girls were doing and they all surrounded Alicia with bowed heads as they joined in prayer….too beautiful!  Wedding photography is a joyful thing…..I know there are many that feel the stress of emotions and expectations that day….but hopefully joy reigns!

Look forward to seeing you again soon Mr. Eric!  Please continue to keep me in prayer…..pretty darn sick at the moment with the ear and bronchitus….doing my best to get well   Praying for your life and your travels!  hugs, Jenny

  • amazing how a day of shooting turns into hours upon hours of post processing huh -_-

  • Eric, I’m on to your little prank… Call me…

    Love ya,
    =Matt=

  • Mate…Your shots are totally awesome. A lot people take photographs but you take life. I have seen many weddings photos, and always love the real shots. I hate stagy wedding shots.Kudos.

  • Your entries are always jam packed with fun stuff :)

  • Long time, no hear.

I love the wedding photos, they are beautiful…

  • Thank you, i hope youre keeping well.

your photography has gotten even more beautiful, if that’s actually possible :)

  • Hey now… ‘purely conceptual’… who was lying, you or him? =)

    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0708/07082009canoneos1dsmarkiii.asp

  • Okay, so you’re doing my wedding.

  • yes they are so amazing. thank you for the comment

  • You should post more often. :)

  • RYC: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s…

I’ll trade it for a photo shoot.

    *grin*

  • Simply beautiful.

  • GREAT photos eric. i’ve been just woroking now at an optometry office. finally had another shoot with joanne since like a month. i’ve been pretty sad not being able to shoot. summer school took the best of me. = and i have yet to hang out with another photog and just go shooting. =

  • Huh huh…she said ‘poignant’.

  • RYC: Oh, I’ll “have to”, hmm? Not even a “if you please, miss, I would be greatly honored if you would deign to…”

    ;)

  • speak of, you able to help shoot a wedding here in seattle on the 8th? ;)   (got any advice?  i’ve never done one…seriously, advice is always welcome :)

  • So what did you end up doing on Sunday?

  • LOL. ryc, you want my body. I can’t figure out if you are being a camera nerd and want my $1700 paperweight or if you are just being ghey as usual.

Come back up to LA, fool.

  • great job.. love the detail shots.. and I love the prayer shot, great moment, and the “reflections of his future” classic.. great eye.. I want to go see those redwoods one day…

  • Seriously, when I get married, and it should be in the next 2 or 3 years, I want you to be one of my photographers. You think you can make that commitment?

  • Those are beautiful pictures!!

  • RYC: There’s some of my artwork on my facebook account. Just look under my albums. Realize, though, that I do a lot of different styles- I’m not nailed down to just what you see there.

  • Oh, and if you wanted more sheer realism, I’d recommend a drawing- I’m better at realism in that form, and can still do it very large scale.

But… your photos are so lovely as they are.

The facebook albums are all I have for now, until I get my website up and running. Maybe I need to create a surrogate site until then.

  • ryc: thanks dood!

  • Dude I want to be a Xanga celeb like you and that other guy. What a bunch of haters! My guns must be defective, they never got up and go on killing sprees.

  • are you still back in cali? if so, check out that exhibit this weekend! :)

  • hello sir! yes, i am planning on being there on the 9th, along with a buddy of mine that is just getting into photography (a total geek too)…so I guess it’s the 9th eh? I guess i’ll get more details as the days roll in closer.

btw, that sandwitch…i want one sooooo bad right now!!!
