  • Alright Southern California…

    …Heads Up!!

Over the past 2 months, my friend Matthew Saville and I
have been comparing notes, shooting landscapes, and slowly
    merging some of our business.

From exploring tidepools, to capturing eclipses and falling
asleep atop cliffs beside the Pacific… All in search of that
    “Perfect Shot”.

Along the way, we’ve pulled a few people along with us,
and they’ve been hard at work convincing us to share some
of the knowledge and experience we’ve gathered over the
    past couple of years.

See, Matt is easily one of the finest nature photographers I
know, and his technical knowledge and skill is difficult to
even fathom. My expertise however is primarily in capturing
people… Trying to show who they really are, and how complete
    their joy is.

That said, if you ever get a chance to see the two of us in action,
you’re sure to get a kick out of it, we’re a truly dynamic duo, haha!

Back To The Matter At Hand…
After many conversations, and a bit of good convincing by our
dear friend Mary we’ve decided to put together the first in a series
of workshops… Starting with beginners, and slowly working our
way up to more advanced techniques.

The focus during our half day workshop, next month in Orange
County will be to help our attendees
    make their images truly
    stand out from the crowd…

Here are a few of the topics we’ll be covering:

    Portraits…

    Eye Me

How to take portraits of people that really make you think,
look ‘deeper’ and hopefully leave viewer feeling like they
know the person better, having seen it.

    Blurring Water…

    Matt Moving water

We’ll teach you exactly what you need to do, to blur water like
a pro, even if you’re using consumer equipment, or a point and
    shoot camera.

    Low Light…

    Moon-Shot

The EASIEST steps to shoot pro-quality images in low light situations…
Even without blurring them like crazy, or ending up with an insane
    amount of noise.

    Composition…

    Matt Lens

All the ‘rules’ of proper composition, plus, how and when
to BREAK them to make your images truly unique (without
    looking uneducated )

    Capturing Action…

    Uncle Eric2

We’ll take you by the hand and show you exactly what you need
to do (With YOUR camera), to capture all your favorite action shots.
[Even at 100+MPH like the shot above!]

    Group Photos….

    Wedding Party Eureka

I see this botched over, and over again… Arranging people can be
so frustrating! We’ll give you some practical tips to help you
understand exactly what to do so people in your photos don’t look
stiff or unnatural… Which leaves room for fun, no matter how ugly
    the surroundings may be!

    Best Of All…

    Matt Teaching

Matt and I both have a similar teaching style…. Though we recognize
the need to explain some things from a stage, we feel it’s more important
to spend the time working one-on-one, or in small groups with our
    students.

That’s why we’re limiting this event to 25 students or less.

Our goal is to offer as much personalized training as possible.
If you’re interested in joining us, at this workshop, or at another
somewhere else in the US (or around the Globe) please fill in
    the brief form below.

  • I don’t know, somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes. It was nice and warm out there. Where’d you end up going

  • ryc in RAW. I just used the in-camera post processing which takes almost as much time as another frame. Another 20 minutes or so easily, probably more. I should pack a second camera when doing star trails.

    Call me after 9pm.

  • I don’t use RAW for much other than highlight recovery and white balance.

  • DUDE amazing as always

  • RYC: I thought about it, but I would mostly be taking jabs at the tediousness of the teachers with their long debates over whether the children should just “Primus” is given. Unfortunately, the headmaster of the school now reads my blog, so I’d like to keep my job…too bad. It would have been really funny.

  • wondering if those of us that just need to learn how to use a digital and are not camara nerds will do OK taking your class??? I signed up and thought I would ask you about it.  David and I were wondering how full the class is and if we could come as a 2fer and learn together.   Sorry I haven ‘t been able to see you much….I hear you have been busy…..but hopefully this week.  blessings, Jenny

  • So I’ll come, but I probably won’t even bother bringing my camera. The beach is so not my element. Not enough cactii.

  • Your photos are amazing!!! You should have a website with tips. I’m all the way in Denmark, a bit of jaunt to get from here to California.

  • There is a striking lack of diversity in your photos.

  • If you ever come to Chicago I want to learn

  • matt is a great man. I have enjoyed shooting beside him.

  • RYC- as always, thank you sir. Let me know about the next workshop, I swear I’ll come to that one. =)

  • ryc: I’m not against discussion, ya know ;)

  • Thanks, Eric — I had a good time, learning about the Av mode, which I will use LOTS, and practicing other things like flash fill and working on composition, etc.  My key now is to become more and more familiar with the camera so I can use it as I used to use my old Spotmatic!  Practice, practice, practice!!!  Thanks for your help, and I look forward to shooting with you again. — Janet

  • ryc: Thanks. And you have a beautiful eye (for taking photos, that is). I haven’t met your mind yet, but I’m assuming it’ll follow. =P

  • jenny731 (see above): Ummm… I’m not sure hitting up blogs with your particulars is a good way to go about finding a significant other. *laugh*

But if you’re going to continue doing it, may I recommend spell checking first?

  • ryc: ya, i had some family stuff the day of the workshop :( are u living in cali now? hopefully i can make it to the next one!

  • yay, what a great opportunity for you two!!  I just know it’s going to be an awesome program! good luck.

  • i think i might take you up on your (non)offer.
the only problem is, it’s hard to call when i don’t have your number.

  • Hi Eric.  I’m about to purchase the Canon 40D and have taken a few online courses.  However, I would love some one on one workshops if you are going to be someplace close to the OKC area.

  • wat kind words

    do i even no u

  • Hi Eric!  Nice to officially meet you today at church. Remember me?  I’m Matt, Ben, Jeff & Will’s mom, Grace.  Anyway, your pictures are great and my boys say you’re a facinating, fun guy to hang out with.

I noticed one of your pictures here on Xanga was of Kristen Simmer (& Jason)’s wedding.  You probably know this but Matt went to school with Kristen at Masters and we got to know her through him.  We were invited to the wedding but couldn’t make it.  So….did you shoot the whole wedding?  I’d love to see more pictures of that wedding, if that’s possible.

I hope we’ll be seeing more of you back here in CA!  Take care!

  • Do you have my number?

  • Cool shots!!  I hope your workshops are a smashing success!  :)

RYC…I just love photography and travel, and God has very kindly given me opportunities for both.  Often He doesn’t, but when He does work things out for me to go these places, it’s great!  :D

  • hey eric, hope your workshop was a huge success!!!! If you guys are the dynamic duo- who’s batman and who’s robin?????????

  • That is such a great idea.  People who aren’t even doing photography as an occupation could value from that kind of information.

  • Wow. You get a lot of comments. You also make long posts. Of course this is coming from someone who never talks, so don’t worry too much.

Anyways, this is Chelsey (I’m the injured one). I wanted to stop by and say hi, see what was going on. Apperantly, We’re still excited with the workshop, which was lots of fun. Thank’s for putting that together. I learned lots of new words to add to my already extensive vocabulary. I’ll be torturing all non-genious people with them soon. Adios!

  • I am a horrible human being and have tagged you for a meme.

Also. I am going to marry your camera. You don’t get hired to do the wedding photography, though, since the camera will be too jittery about remembering its vows to focus well.

  • You’ve changed the site!
    Looks good, more professional.
    Though I’ll miss the white.

ryc ~ of course I made you look good…but don’t forget I have other shots form that day for blackmail
