The Next Step…
Exploring!
At the end of my last post, I left you with a taste of an
exploration trip with my buddy Don. Our first stop was
the Chicamauga battlefield park… I grabbed a few shots
there that I personally found to be pretty darn cool!
Remember the image on my last post “Red Wall”?
Well, here’s a shot of the building that inspired it.
“Peaceful Refuge”
A few hundred yards further down the path we came to another small
building and Don and I peeked in through the cast iron gate it had for a door.
“Curious”
I know, I know… Lens flare is evil.
Somehow though, I like the way it lends mystery to certain images.
It’s also a throwback to my love of the sky I suppose…. Ties things
to reality in an odd way.
And as I’m already thinking whimsically, let me give you a brief intro
on my friend Don… In all honesty, he’s one of the main reasons I am
where I am today in photography. In April of last year, he helped buy
me my first digital SLR, in exchange for my old camera and old laptop.
A steller deal for me, I’ll tell you, and one of many that he’s blessed me
with. Though I have lots of friends, he has persistently done his best to
be there for me, and to stand by while I’ve run all over the continent and
made many changes in my life over the past 2.5 years we’ve been friends,
he continues to remain one of my most trust worthy friends.
Don’s a highschool teacher from North TN, who after watching a man die
on a motorcycle, took it upon himself to do his best to equip riders with the
safety gear that could save their lives. We met after he offered to give me a
set of boots that I desperately needed, but couldn’t afford to buy anywhere
else. I told him that he was my “new best friend” and I suppose it stuck
pretty well. Any way, I know he’ll be reading this, so thank you again Don!
If you want, go check out his semi-new blog and encourage him to post more!
He has some hilarious stories to tell, and some excellent photography that I
know you would all enjoy.

Back to my tale.
At the same stop, I caught this image of a re-created wooden fence.
“Wooden Fortress”
Remember, all of these were taken at the end of October,
so the Fall colors were in full effect! Look for more of
them later in this post.Let’s fast forward a couple more stops.
In the distance, Don and I could see a really cool monument
that looked far too much like a chess piece to not photograph.
A few careful turns and we were in it’s shadow.
“Chess Anyone?”In looking at that image again, it looks a bit like it’s listing to the left.
Ahh well, too many images to edit!Let me do a little two step on you, and take ya’ back a few hours…
On the drive down from my loft in Dayton, we passed a couple of
insanely cool spots that warrented turning around and capturing.
The first one is this:
“Fallen Driveway”I just couldn’t resist the light and colors…
*Side note on this image… Here’s a perfect representation of
a shot that was totally screwed up, then fixed by photoshop.
I took this one with my white balance improperly set… A warm up
filter in PS quickly set that right, then some selective curves were
played with to show what I saw on that cool October day.*After I jumped back in the truck I discovered my mistake, rectified
it and hopped out again less than a mile later to shoot a building that
I’d seen countless times but had never taken the time to stop and capture.
“Overgrown”I just love that little shed/ home… Each time I drive past it,
it’s one step further towards falling down, yet somehow it’s
beauty grows with it’s distress. From the battlefield, we drove South into Georgia.
After a fairly long drive we made our way into
“Cloudland Canyon State Park”.If you’ve never been, I HIGHLY recommend it, it’s gorgeous!
Me at Cloudland:I gave my film SLR to my friend Heather the month before,
so Don let me borrow his Pentax to play with along with
my D-SLR… Fun stuff.A moment after that shot was taken, another photographer took my
place… He was equipped with not one, but TWO Canon 5D’s so I
knew that this was the kind of guy I had to talk to.Turns out that he and his wife shoot stock photography all over
the East coast. Their work has even been featured in National Geographic!
We exchanged emails a few times, and I hope to meet up with them the
next time they make the commute from Virginia.Photographer at Cloudland:
I’ll have to check through my email box to find their photo album
addres… Their work is gorgeous! As we walked back through the parking lot, I captured this image
of a picnic spot with a serious chimney!Gosh, I love Fall colors.
The next stop for us was the “Lookout Mountain Hang Glider Park”
As soon as we arrived, I spotted this guy, looking across the horizon,
seemingly planning his next flight.“Lookout”
A quick look to the left or right revealed a plethora of gliders
and their pilots all awaiting their next launch.Gosh, even just looking at these pictures is making
me miss hang gliding! The only thing in the air while we were there was a group of
these RC gliders… They were awesome to watch!Perhaps the highlight of this stop was chatting with a guy on a
motorcycle and discovering that he knew a lot of the people from the
hang glider park that I used to fly out of , and that he’d even flown into
my old airport!Such a small world.
It’s now 3:15 AM, it’s time to hit the sack.
Will do my best to finish this post tomorrow.Blessings to you all!
~Eric

1st?
Yup, first!
Still finishing the post
It’s late here!
glad to see a fresh post in the works
i really like lense flare too, as long as it doesnt obstruct the entire image…
Definately like the driveway…I would have stopped too
Wonderful pictures Eric. I went and saw your friend. Judi
I love your commentary. Those are nice images. I also happen to love shots with lens flare, when well done, as is yours. I’m still trying to perfect the art of lens flare on my own but for now the lens flare filter in Photoshop will have to do. Let’s see a little less time between posts next time.
LOL!
nice pictures!!! i really like the one w/ the flare a lot for some reason. haha
great shots
holy phallic symbols, batman!
I’ll never look at chess teh same way again.
Hi, Thank you again for sharing your beautiful pictures. I have to admit I have never been to Cloudland, but hope to visit soon. Take Care, Sharon in Athens, GA
Hi, By chance have you ever visited Arabia Mountain, south of Stone Mountain. Actually this was “created” before Stone Mountain. On one side of the property was a former marble quarry which is so beautiful. Sharon
I love your photos! It’s not listing. It looks pretty straight to me.
I just finished putting together my homes-for-sale magazine today, and I have to tell you that I had to rotate some of the photos more than three degrees to make the houses look like they’re actually standing rather than lounging drunkenly. There’s one real estate agent who is totally consistent. I can just type minus (which is equivalent to clockwise) 3 degrees and her photos are straight. Every time.
I’ve deliberately put lens flair into a photo on several occasions with breathtaking results. Some of the best things to do in photos are things that the how-to books label mistakes.
It’s been about 3 weeks since I started the new drug regime your mom suggested, and I feel great. Thank her for me.
And thanks for your prayers and good wishes. I have some temporary work that’s going to help me catch up.
So thanks and keep up the good work, and I’ll do the same for you. I hope things are getting better for you.
Good to see your stuff again! Great shots and I like the explanations too.
beautiful! I especially love the stone fireplace.
I love the lens flare. I looks like you captured part of the supernatural in the ordinary.
great pics dude!
Eric, Thanks for the photo update. I personally would like to see that split rail fence done in monochroms… even just black and white. I bet it’d be an awesome print!
I’ve been wanting to talk to you about cameras. I KNOW you’re a busy man. Could you please tell me what you use? I’m an amateur, just shooting my kids and scenery. I’d like to take a couple of classes at URI. I have a Sony Mavica from 6 yrs ago, and it cost me a grand then. POOR choice. Ok pics, but totally automatic. I’m researching the d-SLRs. My choices are narrowed down to the Canon Digital Rebel… XT vrs xti, probably the later. or a Nikon D80, or the 200…. or an Olympus EVolt 8.0. Of the 3 brands, I originally thought I liked the rebel best… but I held the olymp the other day, and I liked the feel, tho didn’t really like that pop up flash thingy. I’m wondering what your thoughts are. The olympus comes w/ 2 digital lenses, for about 700.00. The other two are more expensive, withOUT a lense. Money isn’t everything, but it’s something, ya know? Looking forward to your input, and glad, as usual, to see your post. Remember, you get up to NH and we’ve got a place for you to stay/eat/shower whatever!
Loving the tour! Cloudland looks like a place you could spend days and days taking pictures
Great pictures! so beautiful. Amazing!
((hugs))
lovely pictures as always.
i miss thee and i think you should come see me soon. =)
You are a blessing as usual! I thought early on that the nothing would be as good as “wooden fortress” but heh, I like the richness of fall color too so like many of them…esp the picnic spot! Love the image you caught of the guy looking out planning his next ride. We get a lot of that with surfers here…deciding to get into their gear or not….they stand checking out the waves with this combined stance of contemplation and intenseness.
Loving our new location. Beauty out the window all day and night! I am threatening to do my own xanga once settled as I am expecting more to report on here…haven’t been able to keep up with the youth xanga while getting moved and settled ;-P
Lord bless you my dear…continuing to pray for you! Jenny
Nice! Nice! Nice! “Overgrown” and “Peaceful Refuge” are my favorites. I would love to be able to paint something similar to each someday. Reminds me of the work of Bob Ross. Of course, photographing such gorgeous shots would be spectacular as well.
Loved this post. Will be watching for the rest. =D God Bless ~ Stephanie
Geez! Thanks alot… I was already struggling with the fact that I have not been out just shooting in many weeks…
i think you’ve given me a roadtrip target… CLOUDLAND CANYON STATE PARK here I come?
all of these are very awesome
Yeah I’ll play chess with you….you move first. It would be incredible to walk into any of those photos, and it looks like one actually could.
Blessings,
Lonnie
ok, so i only read half of that.
rad photo’s though, as always.
Very cool pics, looks like a great trip you guys took. Keep it up!
Thanks for the fall pictures. Sadly, down here in boring Florida the only colors on a tree we get is when they die.
i think wooden fortress would look even better as a B&W
Love the photos! Glad to see you’re doing well.
i like the one called “look out” the best. They are all great however.
Oh my goodness! Eric you are one of the best photographers I have ever seen!!! Every time I look at your blog, your pictures take my breath away!!!
RYC: haha, nobody actually took the pictures. I had this tiny little tripod and all of the first pictures were timed. It was really fun and she had no idea we were taking engagement pictures until I proposed=). We’re getting married on August 4th. YfFL!!!!! (Yay for Freaking Life)
heyy, i like the wooden fortress, though it would’ve been cooler in black and white.
hey did you get my email? just curious if I still had the correct address down for ya man, thanks!
So Awesome, and those colors are amazing!
nice shots. trees look very colorful
that place is gorgeous eric!!!! omgoodness
ryc: thanks man!! actually thinkint about it , it does somewhat look like desperate housewives. hehe
haha we were thinking of using another tripod. . .
, but do you do weddings?
all those girls at the shoot was friggin hot!!!! =P
love your pics! how do you keep so clear?! and not blurry??
hey Eric, posted more off road pictures today…I used your trick to darken the photo I took called West Mesa…I think it turned out really nice
I had no idea you lived here, crazy! maybe we can work it out sometime…and yeah, Cloudland is gorgeous, I’ve camped there and I love it…cool shots
RYC- actually a 24mm Tilt Shift lens… think of it as a more precise lensbaby. I like to do my weird focus effects in camera rather than post-process them in.
Cool shots! Do you shoot RAW or JPG? If you haven’t started RAW yet, I highly recommend it. You’ll never want to go back to JPG afterwards.
Your photos are just great. Judi
Hey there! I have been chatting online with your friend Shelly who is really nice and a great photographer! Have you heard the bands new song? I haven’t, but hope to get the cd soon. Are ya keeping your eyes/ears open for a rebel for me/?? yeah, you’re right, it would be cheaper that way
What are you up to?
Lovely photos! I like the last one!
Happy Valentines Day Hope it is a great one, Judi
you’re very talented!! Love the photographs!!!
You, my friend, are overdue!
Apathy is a miserable thing. Motivation to overcome lack of motivation is… rough.
So what are you up to these days?
Hey! Wow…once again I’m speechless! I was looking at your photos and relized that I have been to Lookout Mountian Hang Glider Park! It was 6 years ago..but it was still fun to watch them.
Anyway I just wanted to let you know that I (Jenny/InHimForever) have switchted over to a new site which is http://www.xanga.com/MySunshine24 I have been telling everyone this so if you see it on other sites don’t feel bad.
Have a great week!
~Because I Know Christ Lives~ Jenny
RYC: thanks Man. I really needed some encouragement this week. It has been…well, it’s just been.
I don’t think it is, not when it is used well, and man, you really use it quite well in more than one shot. The shot “Purple Fire” is really incredible, I am really envious of your skills these days bro.
though, you might be envious of me soon
as I am hoping to work out upgrading to the D2Xs in a month or two…we’ll see if I can pull it off. well, I must go, still have a class assignment that is due in the morning. G’night!
Who says Lens Flare is evil??
i love lens flare!! nice job!
It was SO NICE to hear from you. Wow, are you missed! Well, I love the picture of the view of the street with the fall trees along it. Absolutely beautiful, and things like that just remind me of simpiler times….peaceful.
I wish you were closer by…I would love to have you do some pictures of me pregnant…I really think you would do an amazing job capturing the time….
Hope all is well with you….love you!
i wish there was someway I can get a skyline over here. i’ll figure it out somehow. might have to pull a GTA on that guy.
time for an update!!!
So have you decided to ditch xanga for posting and stick to your flikr site? Abby has an account there, and I’ve been thinking about getting one myself…
Yep, I’m very excited about my lights. We’ll see if what I can get out of them is worth the price huh?
Have a great weekend!
