Flash Forward…
…So I Don’t End Up Shot!
It’s been nearly a year since I was last in Laguna Beach.
A year filled with seemingly endless prodding from the
wonderful Mary, Jenny and Bri, to post about my time there. And yet, life did what life does, and it continued slipping
through the veritable ‘cracks’.This time however, they’ve been holding me captive… Making
me promise to post my pictures, and experiences before I’m
allowed to leave. What’s a man to do?
(Well, obviously a man is to do what the women tell him to, right?)
____________________________________________________
Today’s tale of triumph begins on board a small plane… Winging our
way out of Eureka’s foggy little airport, Southward to San Francisco.I was happy to meet a couple of the coolest people from the
wedding in the seats behind me, so we shared a quick lunch
in San Francisco before catching our connecting flights to the
LA area. The two I met were siblings, and one of them is aiming to be
a photographer… Watch out for posts about him in the possible futureOn the drive down from LAX, my dear friend Bri snorted a
mere 16 times (though one of them lasted 3 minutes straight,
so it may count as more than onehaha.
Shortly after I arrived, I was forced to begin my slaving away
in the kitchen. Pork tenderloins sauteed in pineapple, garlic, and
a handful of other spices ensued. The rest of the week has been filled practically endless photo
shoots, long walks, busted butts, and extraordinary light.Tuesday I finally had the chance to meet a couple of my favorite
xanga people Matthew Saville, and Alex – ‘LexyBeast’. Our plans
included a multi-hour walk/ hike up the coast to do our darndest
to capture the sunset and the water.Matthew Saville.
Now, before I dive into more pictures, I’ve got to let you into a little
secret…. My friend Matt Saville is a HUGE geek!!!!! He’s also a
Nikon shooter, and a fan of all things Nikon-esque.That’s why it was such a kick to see him playing with Alex’s
Canon 1D-MKII N and 24mm Tilt Shift Lens.“Geekdom”
And of course, here’s Mr. Alex as well.
He’d just gotten a hold of one of my new toys… a Canon 15mm
fisheye. I think he was in love, lol.Further down the coast, Matt (ever the avid landscape photographer)
jumped over a barricade and scrambled barefoot across a handful of
boulders so he could grab the perfect angle. Here’s my take of his ‘adventure shoot’.
Matt Shooting Laguna.
Matt Shooting Laguna Numero Dos.
Trying to capture the movement of the water without blowing
the sky toooo far was a real challenge. You can count on a
good tripod, and a couple of ND filters being on my shopping
list in the very near future. The whole crew (Matt, Mary, Alex and myself) went up a bit
further North to capture the last bit of the sunset, and allow Matt
to play around with all his fun portraits.“Masterview”
Whoa, looking at all these photos, and the current time….
I’m going to have to make at least one more ‘Laguna Post’.
Plus I have the photos from the Redwood wedding as well!Check back later this week for both

All in all this visit has been wonderful, but it’s also
had it’s share of insanity, so I’d really appreciate all of your
Prayers, when you can!Talk Soon, I’m supposed to be departing in a few hours

…Whenever you’re ready, feel free to post any pics.
You have my prayers, and may Grace be with you!
=Matt=
I like how you can call your friend a big geek.
Eric was an excellent guest and good cook, we’re sorry to see him go,
there is still so much to talk about, plus show him in our area~ I highly recomend hosting him !
As for my daughter snorting, that’s only happens when she’s laughing really hard
God bless you Eric. You are always in my prayers…you are one of my “boys”
Such a wonderful trip and wonderful pictures Eric. I am glad you got to go. Judi
Hey I just called but you were going through security. I don’t know if you can put a grad filter on a 15mm Fisheye. Yes, Matt is a total camera geek! But it’s cool to be a camera geek this day and age.
ND filters are on my shopping list too.
Again. I love the pictures!
So beautiful!! I awesome like the cameras..Awesome! Need a new one! LOL I do like the little digital I have now. But yes. Wouldn’t mind a new big one! haha!
*hugs*
Thanks for sharing!
Looks like everybody had a good time!
Girls, geeks, and grub…can it get any better? LOL…*snort, snort*
Sorry I was at the wedding and couldn’t call ya back. It’s past your bedtime now. Or is it.
Crap, now I’m the only one who hasn’t put photos from Tuesday up. All right, I’ll do it tomorrow…
leaving already? just met ya yesterday!
With your permission sir, I’d like to use numero dos as my header… (images that actually look good cropped to 1×10 panorama are HARD to come by!)
=Matt=
great pictures…looks like a beautiful place…
my house feels extremely empty without your crap spewd around my living room.
no cameras or lenses, no laptop, hard drive, and the strangest of all…no blue shoes!
it’s crazy how much you became like family in almost no time at all.
you truely blessed me with your kind words of insight.
i’ll continue to pray for your hearts, i have the feeling rad happenings will begin to ensue!
(look at how few comments you have, looks like your popularity has started to plumet, bah haha…)
love you muchly!
and as for the whole “POST!!” comment..i’m thinking about it…
i might take longer if you begin to prod…keep your pants on!
why do you spell avi8tor with a Q?
Because originally, it was my license plate!
And apparently, other people are pilots too
Okay I changed my mind, I found a sweet sunset to use in my titlebar. However, check out my new bio photo and give me a yea or nay, when you can…
=Matt=
And UGH, you’re one of those guys who likes to clutter their desktop with all sorts of stuff! Bleah!
You definitely have me beat for windows open at once though, wow… I feel guilty, we should like switch computers or something; you totally deserve mine way more than I do… Haha maybe when I go out of business you can buy it for really cheap!
=Matt=
Ar har har. Glad you had a great time. If only I’d had my camera, I could have shown you what ensued HERE! Alas. Too bad.
Hope things are going groovylicous.
Taking pictures of people taking pictures.
Oi, the headache…
ryc~ well you could always hand deliver my “new” lens
I can’t afford “shipping” right now, but I’ll work real hard this summer and we’ll see
ryc on smiling…4 hours into shooting my nephew’s wedding, Justin walked up and said I’d been smiling the whole time. I think that’s what people do when they love/enjoy what they are doing! You smile all the time when your shooting
RYC- yeah, I like that first photo as well. It has a very intrepid adventurer look.
It was fun hanging out, let me know the next time you’re around!
Well, I won’t shoot you…you are just too lovable….BUT, I am still waiting for a copy of us at the sawdust a year ago!!!! the flash didn’t go off on mine and you said “don’t worry I got a good one on my camara” HA! You can just email it to me…then it will never have to wait to be part of some terrific, well thought out post
We had fun on our little youth retreat…will eventually get photos up….
Some of the ones in the forest with all the rocks and moss should be fun, as well as the group scaling the rocks. I am only minorly battered and sore from skidding out once on the alpine slide (opps…silly me) and hiking around the forest. My David got sore too…because he runs and jumps and covers many multiples of what I do…..in flipflops no less. Tall lanky boys can be crazy…..yes, that comment is for you too
Please pray for my rt. ear…it is a bit infected and is a serious problem if it escalates…I have been hospitalized many times over this thorn….so need it to calm down. Also to be able to meditate on the Lord…..I am too easily distracted sometimes.
Praying for you! love you dear man! Remember to give your mom some hugs from me!! Jenny
Great post, sounds like you are busy, and I can hardly keep up with where you are living, but can always count on some good shots to come down the pipe. Keep it up.
I have totally sat on that exact place on that bench where matt is sitting haha… waiting for you. I really like the 2nd landscape water picture, the water looks really cool.
Gotta love a man that can cook! I love seeing you on Broncomom’s blog! How fun that you all have become such good friends! ~ Dawn
RYC- That’s ‘played’ it, not ‘shot’ it. =)
I went to Stone last night… now I feel like just turning work into a long nap.
today i remembered why i don’t attempt to draw pictures from a computer screen.
it DOES NOT work.
there’s some kind of invisible distortion [i swear i'm not crazy]
what i’m trying to say is, you’re never going to get a picture drawn of you unless i remember to get the photo’s printed out….which may not be likely, unless you remind me constantly.
praying for your heart my dear friend!
loaf, loaf, loaf!
Thanks for the prayers dear ….I sure need em. The Lord is good and sustains us through so much…as you well know. The ear is still acting up and yucky…..so keep praying! Praying for you …and will continue. Hope we do see you sooner
hugs!!! carefully…I forgot about your back . Jenny
Thanks for stopping by and checking out my blog! I read, well actually stalk yours…so I guess now we have been formally introduced.
Paris is great. I cant wait to put more pictures up. Come check them out over the next week.
photographs of photographers….getting pictures of what and who’s behind the lense! nice…very nice!
He cooks AND he takes gorgeous pictures. New rule: people with as high as content of awesome as you’ve got are required to tithe 10% of your awesome to the underprivileged. And by that, I mean that you must transmit to me and/or The Boy the ability to prepare an edible meal. We are getting tired of frozen veggies, here. At one point, I caught him trying to thaw out ground venison in the microwave, with the plastic still on.
These shots are so awesome! They belong in a mag. I miss my DSLR…hopefully I’ll have enough money to pick up a Canon 20D this fall before the leaves drop
You have 20 lbs of stuff? Sweeeeett….
RYC~ to bad I can’t Fedex you one
Now you need to post the awesome photos you took that same night….please
Just an FYI, Scott’s next workshops are in early Sept. in MO, and there used to be one in the Seattle area but I’m not sure. However living in FL, you will be most interested in the MO workshop of course. But like myself, I dunno if you can come up with the cash for it by then. But I’d love to attend one, that’s for sure! The talk of more workshops is music to my ears…
=Matt=
california has so much to offer, it always whispers to me “come visit…again!”
good times, and good to see you had fun meeting fellow xangans! (met a few myself while i lived in alabama
forgive me, i’ve been drooling at the embraer-esque view (i love airplane window shots). nice work, as always!
no i don’t own a TSE lens, which image were you referring to?
Wow, what an awesome trip- nice to see my xanga friends too on your blog!
That’s alright – the lengthy time it took to reply. You’re not a terrible person
and thank you! I AM getting the hang of it! I’m really digging the camera, and I can’t wait until I get a telephoto lens.
Oh. my. gosh. Change whatever you need to on your site because it just took me a good 4 minutes to watch it load! Have mercy on those with dial-up!
I like the pic. Matt Shooting Laguna Numero Dos.
Ha! I just saw some of these on broncomom’s site and I suppose I’ll be off to Bri, Alex and Matts sites next to see the rest
You’re only allowed to come to Texas and learn how I cheat in photoshop if you promise to teach me to use a flash. I so suck at that and I think it would be a good thing to know for weddings…no? ;P
WOOT !!! I just read we will be seeing you sooner
on my sis’s site. Looking forward to it for sure. I am continuing to pray for you. I was cut to one day at the Sawdust but sold another long panel….so that was sweet. The ear is still bad so please keep interceding my friend. Thanks! HUGS, Jenny
I read Mary’s blog daily and it sounds and looks like you guys had such an awesome time together..what a Blessing friends are!! You take care!! Charlotte
We’re getting married March 22nd, but are looking for a great photographer that would be not so pricey. I would love to go with a professional photography studio…but they are just way out of our price range. We have a couple options right now and are just trying to see what would be best for us. What are your rates these days?
So Eric, I never heard…were you able to recover your images off the hard drive?
ryc~ Ouch $$$ expensive lesson, but glad you could recover the images…just one more reason I would never want to be a pro-photographer.
Just saw the weather report for your area…hope you have airconditioning where ever your staying…
As for fajitas…sounds yummy! Can’t wait for my live-in chef to arrive!
ryc, no, the times I went kayaking, I just put my camera in freezer bags. LOL
Thank you so much for voting
You and Bri……. hmmmmmmmmmmmm… (I don’t know… just thinking!) ~ Dawn
You don’t need to buy a mentorship! Bob’s in CA a lot and if you’re here in Chicago… we’d love to meet you! And YES, I agree… I say that everyday… you never know what God has in store for you! ~ Dawn
Hey bro,
Thanks! Sounds like you had a fun trip to Laguna!
I’ll be checking back to read more soon.
Matt Saville sure gets around! Your like the 2nd or 3rd xangan I’ve read recently that had met him.
also, london? i’d gladly do that again. (australia as well)
ryc~ thanks for the compliments. I’ve become better because you taught me how to use AV!
Have a good week and God Bless you
nice shots. beach looks great! i want a 15mm fisheye
Great picture .
thanks for stopping by last week . it will be nice to see more of your work.
ryc~ so we’re going to have to plan another pool party? Good idea!
RYC: No, I didn’t forget you guys, but I was just mainly writing about my family–extended and such. If you’ll notice, I left out tons of things…
RYC: — Thanks for the compliment! And nice to meet you too. I actually went to Sawdust to visit Mary and to have lunch there — it’s easy to get there often when you live 15 minutes away, as you’ll see from my next post! Hope to meet you when you’re next in CA. Janet
