It Was…
A Success!
Our workshop, that is… We were nearly filled to capacity,
and our attendees each left having learned something that
most claimed was “Mind blowing!”.
More importantly though, it was a blast!
We had a few learning experiences along the way, but for
the most part, things went well, and some of the images that
have come out of it are more than impressive!
Check out a few of our student’s xanga sites for more photos:
Below are a bunch of photos I took during the hours we spent
together… I’ve got to post some from my latest wedding too, maybe
later this week
“Intent”
Mary…
This one was taken to show how precise your focus has
to be when shooting “wide open” at F1.2…. I’m an addict.
Brian….
You may recognize Brian from my photo last month, entitled
“A Homeschoolers Guide to Smoking”… We met at my wedding
back in June, all the way up in Eureka!
Since the wedding, and our conversations, he purchased his
first DSLR and is really a bit of a prodigy… He’s amazing!
Brian #2.
Plus, he’s just so darn photogenic, lol
A Little Cap’n In Her…
This dear girl is never seen outside of her pirate garb,
and she always has a sword within reach. Terribly sweet,
and hilariously fun, I’m so glad she came!
David…
A true goof, if e’er there was one…
Time To Move!
We had a great group, though we caught quite a few
“strange” looks as we walked along.
“Gotta Get Religion”
These guys were getting their own group of weird looks too…
Gotta hand it to them though, it takes some cajones to do
that in Laguna.
*Tech note* Does anyone else have problems focusing
(auto) with the 16-35mm F2.8L into sunlight? I’ve never
had a problem with the lens, except when trying to capture
a little glare… Then it just goes soft as putty… Frustrating!
Beauty.
I love the light and shadows here…
We had a long, but good walk up to our “sunset spot”.
“In The Spotlight”
Bri blew us all away by agreeing to model…
As you can see, everyone got in on the fun
“Dude, Look!”
Victor showing off, and Mike loving every minute of our time
up there…. With his new 1DMKIII (Which shot SO beautifully!)
Finale.

And that’s all I have for tonight folks…
Hope you enjoyed them!
In fact… I’d love to know which photo you liked best; which?!Actually… Come to think of it, here’s a bonus photo for you
from a recent sunset shoot in Laguna
“The Power Within Silk”
I’m planning on posting about the wedding I mentioned
earlier, and I’ll tell you… I LOVE these images! It was a
gorgeous wedding in a Japanese Garden in Long Beach, CA…
Tons of fun

Dude, you know what I realized? I spent so much time handling other people’s cameras and showing them how to use THEIR camera that I tool almost zero pics with my own camera, and I have pretty much none to post lol, other than the group shot.
All in all though, t’was a great sucess. The best part is, everyone who attended will continue to benefit and learn online, but that’s another item for another post…
Looking forward to next time,
=Matt=
Shhhh Matt, you aren’t supposed to talk about that yet!
Hahaha you’re terrible at keeping secrets, lol.
LOL~ LOVE THE GROUP SHOT!
Matt and I were talking about taking the group on a hike. We can wait until ya get back.
Great photos, man. You really need to post more, punk. Mike’s Mk111 is a thing of beauty!!!
As for shooting backlit photos, I found focusing on the edge of the object helps more than focusing on the center as one normally would.
Skunk,
I WAS focusing on the edge… Though the center
AF point IS much more sensitive
You two are like an old married couple. It’s sweet, really. Haha..
Well my favorite is the group shot, mainly because it made me laugh, and snort.
Out of your shots? That’s always a tough one…
I really love the light in “Beauty” [and it's not just because I'm in it].
“David…” cracks me up, I can really tell we’re related!
I love the composition in “Intent”. Fabulous.
I also love the composition in “Brian…” it had the potential of being a horribly boring, cliche photo, but you made it dynamic and interesting. I adore the color saturation as well :o).
ryc- whatever! that “power within silk” beats my gramma griz anyday!
whenever my images are posted, feel free to critique them. ill do the same to yours
I was going to say “In the spotlight” Because I think it’s hilarious and a great shot and then I saw “The Power within Silk” which blew me away.
congrats to you on a very successful workshop!!! it sounds like everyone had a great time.
it’s always fun just being around dorks and nerds that love glass =) till next time =P man that photo of me and mike…the best!!!
very very cool time from what victor tells me. i’ve gotta make it out the next time you have one of these.
no more deep voice answering the phone! I was wishing you were here cuz we had extra tickets to the Dead Sea Scroll exhibit…it was a moving experience! Very well done.
We did enjoy the workshop….David has added photography and equipment to the instruments, surfing, flying etc. wish list of dreams he has going…. I know you encourage them all
Of course I love the pic of David and the “supermodel” shot just cracks me up…how does Bri look sensational and crack me up at the same time? Part of her charm. The lighting and shadows is great in that shot, as well as the perspective through the other photographers. Love “Dude, Look” great faces and expressions. Yeah, it really is fun when you get to be there. Thank you!
Thanks for cheering me up when I was “hot under the collar” . Lord bless you! Missing you til next time, Jenny
awww too bad i wasn’t local, i would’ve went to this workshop. looks like FUN!
As always, I love your photos… but I’ll pick Mary and then of course the last pic as my favorites. You have a wonderful talent, my friend!
Eric, your photos are always beautiful and I love the way you write. If/when I get married someday I’ll make sure I budget to have a great photographer come and to my pictures so that you can be there.
I wish that I could do more with photography. I’m a COMPLETE newbie and don’t even have the money to purchase a camera right now. One of my best friends has a nice digital camera (If you want, I’ll find out what the model is for you) that he says that I can play with once he gets it back from the manufacturer.
Do you have anywhere that you offer newbies tips or anywhere to point me where to start?
“The Power Within Silk” has to be my favorite!
Cowboy
“Dude, Look” has to be my favorite of the bunch. So true.
Two words: Austin, Texas.
Sweet pics, looks like a fun time was had by all
That is a brilliant group shot!
Great job, wish we coulda been there. We watched that same sunset while crossing the state along Hwy 46 into Paso Robles. Thought of all of you…
that last one was me
These shots are horrific. You really have zero talent, amigo.
(Just for the sake of not having to repeat all the same comments I’ve posted before)
RYC: Yeah, right. You never post anything actually personal, anyway.
Well… I’m a sucker for B&W shots, always… plus I’ve never liked landscapes. Human faces and figures are what get me.
I think the Cap’n shot is my favorite, then. I would say the Mary shot, but it looks like all of those “photo of the author” shots you always see on the back flap of a book jacket.
i like the beauty one and the in the spotlight ones..but you always have great pictures anyways
thanks dude
ryc: scott’s workshop is going to rock. no question about it. i’m not sure what the word on the street is regarding jesh’s workshops, but i do know he has waiting lists a mile long!
haha well thanks. . just telling you the truth that you take such good pictures, i think they’re so nice.
hi friend. i really like “intent” and “a little cap’n in her”. definitely favorites.
i can’t wait to see you this week.
And I really like your new site design. There, am I still a meanie?

Man! If you had classes here (Toronto Canada) I’d go!
Looks like you taught them a lot!
Love all the pics!
*hugs*
awe you think bri and i are BEAUTY-ful! haha. fun night!
Wow, workshops look like so much fun! I’ve never been in one! That Matthew is quite talented.
RYC: Thanks for your reply. I’m not going to get my 40D until mid October. However, if you have a workshop in my area after that date I would LOVE it!! I’m getting more camera than I know how to handle…but I am determined to be good at photography before I hit Scotland in May!!!
…also… I’m not ablout to purchase extra lenses until I get the advise that I need. I’m interested in mostly Landscape for my trip …and also of course photos of my grandbabies.
well your on!
ok, i love the group shot! and especially bri and i’s faces! so, i copied it and tried to crop it but it was way to out of focus. so i was wondering if there was any way you could send it to me at a higher resolution?…
Love the new profile pic. My, what a big lens you have!
My favorites of this series are the one of Tiffany, and “Beauty”. Good composition on both. There’s so much going on in Tiff’s face. Did you nail that exposure or did you darken it up in post? Either way it really brings out the detail and emotion; great job.
And I gotta love “Dude, Look!”. w00t!
look like you guys had loads of fun. i like the group pic.
Looks like you guys had a ton of fun!
FABULOUS ~ Simply FABULOUS!!! I love to hear about successful workshops. I had no doubt you and Matt would pull it off. I love the shots of Mary…she’s so beautiful.
~ Dawn
That looked damn fun. I’ll have to make the next one.
BTW, I was practically shooting into the sun all day with my 16-35 at the wedding I shot in August, and I didn’t experience any problems. As for going soft, see this older image: http://lexybeast.smugmug.com/gallery/2764641#147100083 . Probably a Rebel issue.
The pictures are great! Looks like a really fun time.
Hey Eric, Tatiana put up a few of her shots from the workshop at QTsurfer7
I came here to tell you how beautiful these pictures are, and then I noticed the picture at the top of your page with the plane, and then your profile pic. Your site is always fun to visit! You are a great photographer!
Dude where’s teh Skunk??
Oh and does it look a little unsaturated and cold to you, at all? I am trying to figure out Adobe Bridge and all this color space business. Maybe I should shoot JPG for now.
I liked the one of David best. It was cool. You can see alot of his personality in it.
Here, this made me think of you.
Go to this website and click on the song titled “It’s De-Lovely”.
*laugh*
Shoot. Here’s the website: http://www.boilermakerjazzband.com/music.php .
ryc — thanks for the comment on my random photos post! I like that sunset shot too — will need to work on the horizons, as that was about the best I did last night — any tips, besides just lots of practice holding the camera sideways? Thanks again!
Hey man
Thanks! I had fun shooting those
Looks like your workshop was a fun day as well. Wish I lived closer so I could come participate.
Lemee know if you ever make it down to the Dallas – Ft.Worth area and I’d love to come hang out.
AMAZING! i love that picture of mary and of course, the infamous bri modeling for everyone. you gotta get bri a good copy of that photo!
thank you for all of your calls today. jj told me you called while he was at church today and then i got your other message later tonight. i am so sorry i haven’t called yet, i caught a dreadful virus that had me in bed most of the weekend. i’ll call tomorrow early afternoon. sarah and chad are SO HOPING this works out!
i am too and i am also hoping we can get you to do a workshop around here sometime.
P.S. sarah’s fiance chad is into photography too. he just got a new canon and is selling some photography in local art shops. i bet he’d enjoy talking shutterbug with you too!
I’ll try to get a copy of the finished product!
yes, now that i have spoken to you it is official in my book too that you are the coolest guy ever! RYC: i love my camera but i don’t know how to work it very well. it’s a sony alpha 100 which is a new camera they came up with when they bought minolta last year. apparantly it combines the best of both of their technologies (so i’ve been told by the wolf camera guys anyway). jim surprised me with this for christmas last year so i’m committed to learning how to make the most of it’s uses! i probably need your help…LOL
that looks hella fun!
hey, great to hear you had an awesome turnout, looked like an amazing time!!!!
Eric, no problem if you want to attend my LA workshop instead of the caribbean, just let me know or you can come to both!
)
Hi!
Your pictures are beautiful as always. The guy’s tshirt has Coca Cola on it in Hebrew! Is it from my part of the world?
