  • Alas and Alack…

    So Many Entries Begun…

Only to jump ahead, because I simply MUST share my experience
at Scott Robert’s workshop last week in Pasadena.

See, I’ve never before had the opportunity to learn anything about
photography in any kind of classroom setting. All of the advancement
I’ve made these past couple of years has been through intense immersion
within the photography world, and hard work at understanding light and
exposure… And my how far I have come!

I was straight up AWFUL in my early days, lol.

Let me be honest…. I really wasn’t sure what I would learn from Scott,
I thought I had a fairly good understanding of light, post processing, and
posing, but GOSH was I wrong!!

Scott is the MASTER of looking for reflected light, using architecture,
and posing people in a manner that looks natural, comfortable, and
gorgeous. I had the opportunity to follow him around and shoot over
his head (he’s just the right height ) during an engagement session…
    What an eye opener!

Before this workshop, I’d see a location I liked, and try to make the light
work for IT. Now, with Scott’s secrets crammed in my little head, I do
my best to see the light first, and plan locations around IT.

I think we’ll be seeing a drastic improvement soon
But first, on to the photos!!

    The Lovely Abigail

Learning, Shooting and (Obviously) Having A Blast…

    Scott Teaching “Hotel Room Strategies”….

He has some brilliant techniques and explains them to each of
his students extremely well, I encourage you to take one of his
classes as soon as possible, and tell him I sent you!

    Aimee…

Playing with my off camera flash… And just bought yet another flash
unit, lots to learn and play with!

    “Finding Light”

Did I mention that Scott is the MASTER of finding light?
This stairway was practically pitch dark, but the reflected light from
the foyer was absolutely amazing, as you can see.

    Pasadena = Incredible…

I’m quietly planning a weekend trip back to Pasadena sometime
soon, the possibilities for freaking sweet photos are incredible!

    The Lovely Linda…

    Tones…

    The Glorious “B”…

A talented fellow student from the UK

    The View From His Perspective…

    Crazy eh?

    Processing Time…

    Shot with Scott’s 5D and 50mm F1.2L
This image inspired me to buy a 5D, I picked it up today
    Next up? 50L methinks…

Well, I started writing this post about 14 hours ago, and I’ve
been going nuts! 2 photoshoots, 1 new camera, and 162 new emails.

Plus, I’m flying back East for Christmas, Friday morning so I really
should get to packing and planning!

Soon, I’ll update you on where I’m living, what I’m doing, which
5 States I’ll be in over the next 30 days, and each of the dozens of
    photoshoots and experiences I’ve had lately… I can’t wait!!

  • From what I’ve been seeing it looks like it was an awesome workshop!

Love the shot of Abby… very nice and sharp!

  • Ahh your photogs are GREAT!!!!!  Love them!!!!!

  • There is something very much missing from most all of my photography, something that as of yet NOBODY has been able to magically impart to me, or share with me a secret formula, and you have captured it in the photo of Abby, and for this I kind of hate you.

    =Matt=

  • you really do rock eric. i love how you tell the story behind every photo! GREAT TIMES Eric@!!!!!  I made so many great friends, it’s WONDERFUL!

  • GREAT PICTURES!

  • looked like a very enriching experience! i wished i could have gone.

  • Your photos just keep getting better! I can tell you work hard at it! I learned something here.

  • Nice work Eric.  I like the  post processing you used, a lot… and the first is my favorite.

  • thanks for the update Eric! I always enjoy them

Just when I thought your photos couldn’t get any better…. they do! GREAT job… I loof forward to many morein the future.

Stay safe as you travel all over the place.

  • Super awesome workshop!!!  I’m so glad you were able to attend Scott’s class.  He’s a great teacher.  Love your images too!!!  And yes, we did hang out all day with Kenny….!  He reminds me much of you.  He kept asking and asking and finally Bob was home for more than a week without something to shoot one day.  It was worth the wait.  Kenny was here in Chicago for a Bulls game and it just worked out.  We’d love to meet you too and we will.  xoxoxxo  Merry Christmas!!!  ~ Dawn

  • I am impressed, I love the usage of the reflected light.  I am always struggling with lighting issues, to much, not enough, glaring/harsh.  As always, enjoyed viewing your work, thank you so much for sharing!

  • Again. Amazing pictures!!!

I would love to take one of his classes!! I’m actually saving up to get my own Digital SLR! Yay! A Canon cause then I can use the lenses from my Canon T70!

    Woo!

    LOL

    *HUGS*

  • I’ve always wanted to do a photography workshop…I actually have a photographer picked out who conducts them…Audrey Woodard in Chicago. She does children/commercial photography just like I like…now it’s just a matter of getting to Chicago ;)

  • *The portrait of Abigail is stunning! The majority of people I know would pay good money for a picture like that of themselves or family.
*Aimee~flash made the image fun and colors pop
    *Finding Light~ soft and flattering
*Pasadena…put Rachel in a wedding dress in that location!
    *Lovely Linda~ Love the background!
*Tones ~ such even light and great depth of field

It has been such fun watching your photography skills get better and better over the past year, heck make that week by week!

  • wow you’ve been around.  congrats on your 5D, still can’t believe you bought one!  you barely got the 30D LoL.  hope all is well and travel safe this holiday season sir!

  • Most excellent dude!!!  Very nicely done.

    Asian firing squad.  Hahahaa!

  • I told my friend Amy about you but she’s getting the woman who did our senior portraits *yawn*

    Where are you from originally?

  • Oooooo… those are really neato- I really like the reflecting light.

  • ooooh – it’s my beautiful abby friend!!!!  yay!

looks like you guys had the best time ever…. gotta do that someday!  :P

  • sweetness eric :) good job like alllways. they’re always great pictures. i like the first one, the “pasadena=incredible”, and “the view from his perspective”. :)

  • Great post!  glad you got to see Scott’s workshop! I keep trying to get him up here to Minneapolis and it just hasn’t worked out yet!  Drats!

  • Your pictures gorgeous, as usual! :o ) I really like the one from the angle of the student from UK. I would think it would be intimidating having all those cameras faced right at you!

  • excellent pictures, as usual!

  • so uhh..wanna send that extra camera over? :D

  • Thank ye kindly, sir.  =)

  • I think Matt now understand the power and beauty of a portrait well taken, IMHO it is far more engaging than any landscape photo because of the human element we all share. I guess if i was an ocean or a mountain, I’d appreciate landscapes more. You are extremely intelligent, young and passionate and know the value of quality education and are not afraid of paying for it at any cost because you know that is the difference that makes your work better than the rest. I know you will go far if you continue the course. Thanks so much for contributing much to the group. Can’t wait for you to cause your own waves in OC, I know you can do it!!!

  • I’m glad someone else on here likes Ron Paul! :) People tend to gang up on him.

  • You did a great job on this post!!  Nice to see more images from the workshop.  All shots are really good.  The “tones” one really strikes my fancy besides sweet Abby-girl.

  • ALL OF THEM!

    haha.

  • Now this is talent!

  • Are you talking about the snow day one, because I don’t have my camera anymore :(

  • As per usual, nice pics.  They just keep getting better.  In my ever so humble opinion, your best pictures are of people–you capture their essence very well.

  • Sorry — you’ll have to be patient — there were about 1,500 shots to go through — but thanks for the comment!  It was a wonderful trip — good people, good whaling, good birding, lots of penguins, and LOTS of ice!  I’ll get more posted as I sort through them — two good outings each day, so it will take several posts!

  • Those were some amazing pictures! I really liked the first one the best. I like using light and dark contrast with one simple color to enhance the person. In that case, the color was blue. Cool!

  • abigail and the glorious “B” are so professional looking!  that class was exactly what you needed because those are spectacular and exactly the quality shots sarah wants at her wedding (especially with the solider groupie shots).  what took you to my hometown today….twice?  i love charlotte!!!

have fun with bri tomorrow.  we are praying for her safe arrival in florida.

  • Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2008!  Great photos!

  • Thanks for the critique. I fixed it hopefully.

  • you are like a xanga comment ninja!  wow!

  • Looks like an aweeesome workshop!  Looking forward to more photos :)

  • RYC: Thanks! I actually made it myself by taking a picture of a mock film strip!

  • i like how you can stir the sentiments that only california can bring.  these are fantastic, for lack of any better (non-cheesy) words.  absolutely fantastic. :)

  • ryc — That’s about one more wedding per person you take with you.  It was strenuous, but very exciting!  But they do have seasonal photographers on board — 2 and a videographer, who went everywhere we went and then some (they were up and about all the time taking nature shots when they were not taking passenger shots) — and the videographer made a specialized DVD for sale to the passengers of this trip only.  It looked like a fun job!

  • i see you just picked up the 5D.  you must be happy!  thanks for the info.  FF sounds nice right about now hehe.  happy new year, bro! =]

  • I want 5D so bad!
When experience allows me… I’m considering Nikon D3!  I heard that camera rocks :D
