Eric Buys A 5D…
And LOVES It!!
So, way back in December I got a wild hair and finally bought
myself a Canon 5D. I’d been searching for months and finally found
“the one”. It’s owner put it on a plane with a flight attendant the next
day and a few hours later I picked it up at Long Beach airportOf course, as you might imagine… This is far from my first camera,
in fact it’s the fifth in my current stable!!(You might even call me
a bit of an addict, haha) But… Outside of film this was my first FF
camera and I must admit, I’m an addict.The depth of field is incredible, here… Let me show you a few photos
from my very first day with it
“First Shot”This is also a first look at my new digs here in Laguna…
You’re looking out the window from my little office desk
and over all my Pre-Christmas trash if you stare REALLY
hard in the top left corner of the “view” you can see the ocean
about a block and a half awayI met Matt and Mary downtown for a quick shoot which
turned into a rather full evening quite rapidly!
Greenpeace?I think Matt might have even signed up.
I also bought a new surf kayak…
But no, that’s not me… Haha.
Did I mention the depth this camera offers??
70-200 Shot @ F2.8… Not even a prime!
Mary liked the fact that I could now let her use my 30D…
Got to Love the Chrismas SeasonAnd then I got to capture Matt doing what he does best… You have
to see his last posts with the images from this shoot!
“Pink Sunday”
(Thanks to Scott for the action!)He’s totally in his element there.
The moon rose just before sunset, and it was beautiful!
And then…. My first crazy sunset shoot with the 5D
And that’s all for today folks…
The whole point is that I like my new 5D very much…
Though I cannot WAIT for an update, I NEED better AF sensors!

i love the DOF! i just got a 5d too. should be here today. -= D
Gorgeous DOF even at 2.8. Pretty much sums it up… Oh and free vignetting! Now you don’t have to default it in BR as much!
Since the 5D replacements might not be here until August, now will be the time for people to pick up a 5D for a shockingly low $1800 or so. Eric, you wheeler-dealer, didn’t you get yours for that much WITH the vertical grip? Although indeed the 5D is not meant for fast-action sports, its meant for studio and portrait work which is indeed where it is a holy grail.
Canon is obviously re-thinking their strategy now that the D3 and D300 have been such a one-two punch… Expect not one but TWO 5D replacement / upgrade bodies at the Photokina expo this year, and at last one of them is going to be earth-shattering!
And LOL if you had busted out your EOS 3 and some Velvia, that last sunset shot would look even better! I can’t wait for your eyes to pop out when you shoot that first roll. Assuming we get another STUNNING sunset to do it justice…
=Matt=
gotta love that DoF…someday I’ll have one =) Till then, I’ll keep dreaming
and Matt is totally in his element LoL…he’s home at that 3rd to last pic.
cool new camera, that DoF is pretty awesome!
~S
have fun with that camera
that last picture is awesome
great job
WOW I am incredibly envious of your new toy. lol Great pictures. I really like the last one… it looks like the sun is bleeding on the beach.. that doesn’t sound as good as it looks.
i dig it!
I wasn’t aware that Nikon made the Canon EOS 5D, but I gues they must have given that it’s FX and not FF, hehe.
But anyway, semantics aside, great pictures and congrats on the camera. I like that beach sunet a lot.
PS. Wanna get a “Micro” (not Macro) lens to go along with it?
Absolutely Beautiful pictures…I can actually notice the difference…and I’m just an observer.
Blessings…
great post.. love the shots.. you captured matt beautifully (yeah yeah I know that sounds a bit girly)… you should save that image for a gift (matt you didn’t read that)… ANyway, fantastic job, enjoy your new camera…
I think this is your first photo geek post! LOL Wonderful to see your passion for your profession
btw, Matt needs that Pink Sunday photo for his bio at the coffee shop gallery ASAP…you probably should rewrite his bio for him too!
I think the old guy on the bench is my favorite, very painterly looking
@DJ_Stunna -
@DJ_Stunna - FX, FF, Micro, Macro… I haven’t been sleeping much lately, lol
@Av8tqr -
Hahaha yeah… I just couldn’t help but tease
I’m so jealous of your 5D, though. I want one pretty badly, but I also want the 24-70 f/2.8L (or the 24-105 f/4L IS), the 17-40 f/4L, and the 40D (or an XSi)… Why are all these things so expensive? *sigh*
PS. do you iStockphoto by any chance?
@DJ_Stunna - Of course, I’ve also been considering a switch to the D3 so perhaps
this slip was a bit freudian?
Do NOT buy the XSi…. And heck, expensive?
I can pick up another 30D (Lightyears ahead of your XT) for less than $650.
I don’t iStock yet… Should I?
@Av8tqr -
Haha – I totally disagree with the lightyears ahead… 30D is still digic 2, very similar sensor, 12 bit raw, and same noise performance. The image quality is identical. The 30D was the most insignificant change from the 20D, and the 20D never had superior image quality compared to the XT (and all reviews comparing the two were quick to point it out). Also, I don’t need any of the extra AF points, shooting speed, or spot metering. I do, however hate the feel of the xt in my hands. I would have completely agreed if you had mentioned the 40D, though.
The XTi however will produce images that are superior to my XT (and obviously also the 20D / 30D), and inline with the 40D, but with 2 MP more resolution. I was aiming at a 40D as my next camera, but now the XSi makes me not want it anymore. But then again, the feel of this (still being a small rebel body) may make me want the 40D. Perhaps I’ll wait until the 50D comes out, or something.
As for that little slip… Yeah, the D3 is a sexy camera.
@DJ_Stunna - Ahh… Whereas I DESPERATELY needed the better AF performance, which is why I made the switch.
Now, I wish I’d gone to a 40D for the even faster AF, but there’s always next time
What were you saying about iStock?
@Av8tqr -
Ah I was just wondering if others here on xanga were on it. I juuuust signed up a few months ago and started uploading this sunday. I only have a couple of images up there right now, and only one download because I’m lazy, don’t have ‘stock photography-ish’ shoots, and can’t think of good keywords, but I’ll change this soonish.
One of the doctors in my lab has made about 400 sales (for about 6 or 700 dollars) in a few months through it, and I really want to follow suit. Then again, she has more lenses, and primarily shoots stock type stuff, unlike how i just do ’pretty pictures’. Oh well…
what, Nikon made the CANON 5D….?
I need a REAL camera. I just have a little bitty Canon point and shoot. I guess that’s good though since so many of my cameras get dropped and/or stolen…
How much did that cost?
5D…..sweeeettt! =)
that last pic is so freakin sweet
Oh my GOSH, Eric! these pictures are phenomenal. Common, a single lens cant make THAT much of a difference, can it??? The shot of your friend crouching by the tripod with his backpack on his back, waves in the background, is awesome. Best of all is the sunset shot tho. Phenomenal. Can I print it? Or, purchase a print????
hugs
Becky
hey eric, it was great meeting you and hanging out. yes, the 5D is sweet! sorry i can’t shoot with you later tonight. we’ll have to do it soon.
I’ll join that exclusive ’5D Club’ soon!
Love the images! Especially the shot of the guys on the bench and the one of Mary shooting with your 30D. Congrats on the new 5D… Bob loves that camera! ~ Dawn
Love your shots and your new blog. (AND that you’re blogging more regularly now. I’m trying to do the same.) I’ve moved myself over to a new blog (http://jasminemariephotography.blogspot.com, if you’re interested)
God bless!

Wow! I love your sunset photo! I really have to get me an EF lens so that I can take my 5D out for a test drive!!!
i swear your photos are amazing. i use a 400D. anyways, you need to give us tutorials on how you take such professional, clear, crisp photos! by any chance are your photos HDR?
@michyed - Heya!
You want my secrets?
Lots, and LOTS of practice.
None of the images you see here are HDR’s, just carefully metered
and planned… I wish I could claim to be a genius, but practice and
education really do well
You’ll have to try to make it to one of our next workshops!
@verucagirl - Haha not just a lens, but a camera… And no, the equipment isn’t all that’s too blame, I must admit
Prints ARE available, yup!

LOVE the old guy on the beach shot, very nice. I also love the one of matt and the pink sunset, I totally need his tripod, do you know what kind it is?
@coolmomofeight - It’s an Induro tripod… Love it!
5D! I’m super jealous.
That last shot is soooooooooo soooooo amazing. I want to be there right now.
Hey friend.
I love the photo shoot with the brides. Can’t wait for mine! I have a feeling that by the time I get married I won’t be able to afford you!
@bzpsalm139 - You need to tell that man of yours to hurry up!!
Haha
congrats on the 5d! i luv mine:)
awesome shots! i bought a 40D not too long ago but have heard so many good things about the 5D. did you buy it used?
Wow, that sunset is absolutely gorgeous x 100 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re right!!! You can not beat the image quality of a 5D and the 9 sensors are kinda a joke but this camera in low light is amazing as you know. Congrats on a great purchase and I know this will help further your blossoming career!
UPDATE !!… please
